Angle Lab Update: The Optimizer Slider Finally Earns Its Keep

Angle Lab v1.33.2 is now live at wingbones.com/angle-lab — free, in your browser, no install.

If you've used Angle Lab's optimizer before, you may have noticed the priority slider didn't seem to do much. You'd drag it toward Max Penetration and... get the same answer. Drag far enough the other way and it would suddenly suggest a nearly flat center with extreme tip angles. We dug into why, and this release fixes it properly.

The slider now makes real trades. The optimizer builds a path of candidate setups for your wing, and each of the nine slider positions selects a genuine compromise along it: left trades a little thermal-turn stability for lower drag, right does the reverse, and every step blends smoothly into the next. Best of all, the Balanced setting still returns exactly the same angles it always has — if you built to a previous suggestion, nothing second-guesses it.

Smarter about tip angles. Suggestions now favor putting dihedral into the center joiner and keep tip angles in the preferred 2–8° range — because steep tip joints cost more penetration in the air than simple models capture. And if a high tip angle ever is recommended (say, your center joiner is fixed at a low angle), the app now tells you why and estimates the drag penalty, instead of suggesting it silently.

Sharper diagram, better inputs. Per-panel center angles now display to two decimals (a 4.5° total correctly reads 2.25° per side — what you actually set at the building board), the total center angle appears right on the diagram, and the experimental wing gained the same angle hints as the baseline.

Tell us how it flies. There's a new Contact WingBones button at the bottom of the app. Flew a suggested setup? Found something odd? Have a feature idea? That feedback directly drives what we improve next — several changes in this release came straight from real flying experience.
